The Challenge: Texture and Silhouette

30 day photo challenge

This week I am covering the fourth challenge which I accidentally skipped, and the seventh challenge of the 30 photo challenges. To make these challenges even more difficult it was pouring rain when I had the time to pull out my camera and work on the challenges. I grabbed my camera and headed to take my youngest daughter to work hoping I would think of somewhere that would have interesting subjects for the challenges. With the gloomy skies and all the ran I thought I was going to have to just head back home and set up my lights and find a subject there. Then I saw that the parking lot lights were on and shining really bright. After a few minutes of looking around the car for something interesting to shoot, this is what I came up with.

4th Challenge: Texture

I parked with the light about 50 feet in front of my car and hung my necklace from the sun visor. I took this shot and then remembered that I had the white balance set for tungsten lighting so I changed it, but decided I really like the blue cast of this photo much better than the other photo. I did boost things like clarity and tweaked tones a bit to enhance the texture aspect. Side note: The red spot in this photo is a passing cars tail light reflected in the raindrops on the windshield.

7th Challenge: Silhouette

Same necklace, just a different section. Once again I shot with white balance set for tungsten. The only post processing I did with this photo was a slight crop to remove a thin line of the visor which could be seen at the top of the photo and to boost clarity by a little.

I do believe that the poor weather actually did me a favor, because it made me get more creative with both the subject matter and how to meet the challenge under less than ideal circumstances. Side note: The moon like white spot in this photo is actually the light reflecting in a raindrop.

In addition to these photos of my necklace I also took some silhouette shots of the two action figures that my friend has sitting on the dash of her car, which I was driving. I often shoot texture shots but seldom shoot for a silhouette, so this was a lot of fun in that aspect too. How about you, do you look for and take texture or silhouette shots?

Took this picture last night and couldn't help but think how just like in our lives it's the rough spots that add texture.

Winter Revelations

Yesterday morning as we headed out early to run a few errands the air didn't feel all that cold but the car windshield was completely iced over. 

Sitting in the car waiting for the windshield to defrost I couldn't resist capturing a few abstract and macro shots.

Frozen Heart

 Changing focus; above focus on the defrosting windshield, below focus on the tree.

Above I was drawn to the water droplets and variations in color. Then I noticed the tiny reflection of the tree in a number of the droplets so I got in closer for this macro.

Weekend Reflection Submission

 When my daughter stepped out to clear the ice off the windshield wipers I just had to go for this abstract silhouette.

Welcome to one of my favorite photography prompt memes. 

This weeks prompts were more challenging than I had at first thought they would be. I am glad to say I managed to finish the challenge without having to draw from my archives. So here we go.

Beneath Your Feet:

All week I struggled over this prompt. Of course I was taking it too literal. I kept taking pictures of what was under my feet, with of course my ugly feet in the photo. Then while going through this weeks photos I saw this and was reminded how I found it. I am sometimes surprised by what I step on while my eye is glued to the viewfinder.

Capturing Movement:

This week I captured a number of really fun movement shots. It was actually pretty hard for me to decide which one to use. After a bit of arguing with myself the jet skis won.

Texture:

I find textures fun and interesting to photograph, but when I saw this I couldn't resist capturing it and using it for this prompt.

Face Your Fears:

Awwww, and for the most difficult of all the prompts. I am lucky to have few fears so I was at a total loss. Then while headed into down town Norfolk for some much awaited photo time I saw this.

See it there on the left. That little red pump! Now I don't know about you but that little light strikes a bit of fear into me when I am traveling in an area that I am not familiar with. So I though hey this could be my fear shot. Then it dawned on me for it to truly be a FACE your fear I would have to continue into down town where I had no idea where a gas station was or I could turn around and go back to the station a few miles back and find a different photo for this prompt. Well, I turned around. So once again I was at a loss. I thought, alright so what else do I fear... having my photo taken when I am not 'PUT TOGETHER' . . .  nope I didn't face that one either. So that left taking a photograph of a stranger from a distance of less than two feet. Well here you go I did face this one, and it wasn't bad. I didn't get caught.
